The Unbreakable Source of Truth

I used to love watching Christian TV, specifically the Trinity Broadcasting Network (TBN).  I would often race home after church on Sundays to see the latest programing. Those programs about prophecy were always my favorites. And yet, some of the other things on this so-called Christian channel never sat quite right with my understanding of Scripture. As I noted in a September 28, 2009 post on Facebook:

Though the content [of TBN] is often interesting, I sometimes find it hard to validate some of the things said with the Bible. I guess we can never be too careful with what we are taught these days.”

At the time, I was 28 and 28-year-old me was apparently quite discerning. I have tried to become even more so as I have grown older. Sadly, a huge amount of the TV that calls itself Christian is full of false teachings and straight up heresy. Christian networks are often playgrounds for the dangerous, heretical, and often blasphemous Prosperity Gospel.

So be warned! Pretty much any teaching that emphasizes personal prosperity and sowing seeds is something to eye with suspicion and to most likely to run from. This is not the Gospel of Jesus Christ, yet the vast majority of Christian TV teaches it like it is. When it comes to financial giving, the scriptures are clear, saying in 2 Corinthians 9:7:

Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”

In other words, give what you want with joy because you love the Lord. Give to your local church, give to missionaries, and give to ministries you trust. But if your giving is motivated by selfish intentions and not love for the Lord and His people, it is better not to give at all. As the scriptures also say, “You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions” (James 4:3).

All this to say, be very discerning about the teachings you receive. The Prosperity Gospel is only the tip of the iceberg of false teachings out there. I still enjoy some Christian television, but much of it I have had to reject. I have learned to test everything against God’s word, the Bible. It alone is the unbreakable source of truth. As it is written, “…let God be true, but every man a liar…” (Romans 3:4).
