So, the Little Drummer Boy has been receiving a lot of flack this Christmas, but let’s set the record straight, shall we. In the original song, it was the Wise Men who called the boy to offer his gift. In the Bible when the Wise Men came it was a time of gift giving and worship (most likely not on the same day Jesus was born), and no one was trying to sleep. Additionally, in the only Little Drummer Boy movie I know about the Drummer, or Aaron as he is named there, plays for Jesus in the desperate hope that his little lamb that was injured will be healed…and it is. So let’s cut the kid a break. And while he is a fictional character, his story reminds us that it is not the size or quality of the gift that matters, but rather the sincerity behind it. As Jesus himself said, “And whoever in the name of a disciple gives to one of these little ones even a cup of cold water to drink, truly I say to you, he shall not lose his reward.” (Matthew 10:42).
